Strengthen the socio-economic-environmental condition of the war affected coastal population through land rehabilitation & mangrove plantation through HDO

hdo sri lanka

For the promotion of environmental protection, HDO in collaboration with Coastal Conservation, Divisional Secretary, Gramaniladhari, Kilinochchi District Vocational Center, Kowtharimunai Farmer Organization and youth club planted 1600 mangroves in the coastal area of Kowtharimunai Sea on 26th of October 2021. It helps the farmers prevent sand erosion and natural exclusion barrier for sea water intrusion into the 600 acres of paddy lands at Kowtharimunai.

On the other hand, the nature of this plant is that the dense root systems of mangrove forests trap sediments flowing down rivers and off the land. This helps stabilize the coastline and prevents erosion from waves and storms. Also, mangrove plants that protect sea water, home for a large variety of fish, crab, shrimp, and mollusk species, paves increased livelihood opportunities for the fishing community in the area as well.
